How it all began in Greece

Serpent-and-egg

Serpent-and-egg

In the beginning there was Khaos (Air), the first goddess of fate and the void from which all else was formed.  From Her emerged, Ananke (Fate) and Khronos (Time), Nyx (Night) and Erebos (Darkness), Gaia (Earth) and Ouranos (Heaven), and Tartaros (Underworld).

Ananke is the primeval goddess of inevitability, compulsion and necessity.  She emerged a serpentine goddess whose outstretched arms encompassed the universe and entwined with Her lover Khronos, the serpent god of time who has the heads of a man, lion and bull.

Within the embrace of Ananke and Khronos, Nyx conceived of Erebos a silver egg.  The serpentine bodies of Ananke and Khronos encircled the silver egg in their coils.  From this cosmic egg emerged Eros (Sexual Desire) and the ordered universe.  It is this eternal cosmic embrace which drives the rotation of the heavens.

With Eros attending on Nyx and Erebos they brought fourth Hemera (Day) and Aether (Light) to illuminate the void.  Once all could see the beauty of what was in the Aether of Eros the true creation of our world began with the coupling of the primeval gods.
